Administration of Justice - Why Study ADJU

Curriculum

The Administration of Justice curriculum at Modesto Junior College prepares the student for a career in a variety of criminal justice agencies on the local, state and national levels.  Our program is designed to teach students the principles of the justice systems, evidence gathering, criminal law, juvenile procedures, narcotics investigation, community relations, firearms training, traffic control, and patrol procedures. Students may choose a concentration in Law Enforcement or Corrections.   Furthermore our curriculum prepares students for transfer to four-year colleges offering a major in one of the criminal justice fields.

We are currently in the process of considering adding a "Forensics" component to our Administration of Justice Program.  Students wishing to go into the Forensics Law Enforcement field may want to look at available courses at Modesto Junior College prior to transferring to a four-year college.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of our program receive an Associate of Arts/Science degree and have an opportunity for employment with law enforcement and correctional agencies including police officer, correctional officer, probation officer, detective, crime scene investigator, parole agent, youth counselor, customs agent, border patrol, INS Agent, and security officer. Also, career opportunities in education are available in various teaching fields.

All courses are open to individuals who have been admitted to the college and who meet the prerequisites, unless specifically exempted by statute. Courses which involve the handling of firearms, mace, or baton are not open to individuals who have been convicted of a felony or who are mental patients. (Penal Code Section 12021 firearms, 12403.7 chemical agents, 12020 batons, and Welfare and Institutions Code 8100-01-02-03.) Prior to use of a firearm in any course, each student must sign a declaration to the effect that he/she is not prohibited from such use by Penal Code Section 12021. Students are also advised that some of the Administration of Justice courses include actual or simulated experiences which require considerable agility and physical ability.

All candidates for degrees in Administration of Justice must consult with an Administration of Justice advisor to select the courses most appropriate for meeting both the MJC graduation requirements and the current demands of employing agencies and transfer institutions.
