Reserve Police
Officer/Deputy Sheriff Information Page
Every police department has different regulations on what type of reserve
deputy sheriff or reserve police officer they will hire.
Level 3 Reserve Officers/Deputy Sheriffs:
People who work as reserve officers/deputies...at the jail, can simply take the PC 832 Firearms and Reserve Officer Level 3 and be hired.
In most departments, these reserve officers or deputies can only do limited custodial type of duties. In some cases, Community Service Officers (CSOs)
and Animal Control Officers take the Reserve Officer Level 3 so that they can write citations.
Police Dispatchers may also take the Reserve Level 3 so that they
understand the basic state laws and reasons why officers make arrests,
search suspects, document and investigate criminal incidents, etc.
Level 2 Reserve Officers/Deputy
Sheriffs:
If you want to get hired with a law enforcement agency and possibly go on uniform patrol with another full-time officer, you will need the following courses: PC832, Reserve Officer Level 3, and Reserve Officer Level 2.
Level 1 Reserve Officers/Deputy Sheriffs:
If you want to get hired with a law enforcement agency and possibly get released to work patrol on your own (also called Level 1 reserve), you will need: PC 832, Level 3, Level 2 and Level 1 Reserve Courses. Once you complete all of these courses you will have the equivalency of the police academy with approximately 1,200 hours of instruction. If you choose to attend the police academy, it is currently 960 hours of instruction.
As for programs to take these courses, we currently recommend Delta College in Stockton, Merced College, or Fresno College.
Depending on your age and career endeavors, you should examine the above listed options and pick the one that best fits your lifestyle and future plans.
Delta College currently offers a part-time police academy that runs from Jan to Oct (10 months long). In most cases, their students work other full-time jobs while attending the full-time
academy. You can get additional
information by accessing their program at:

Merced College currently offers the Reserve Officer Levels PC832, Level 3 and Level 2.
You can get additional information by accessing their program at: http://www.mccd.edu/academics/divisions/business/facstaff/gregbio.html
You will need to go to Fresno if you anticipate completing Reserve Officer Level 1.
