Physical anthropology. Our physical anthropology program includes both lecture and laboratory courses. Our teaching collection houses several dozen early hominin fossil replicas, as well as a large collection of human skeletal materials, non-human primate skeletal material and replicas, as well as additional faunal materials to give students a hands-on experience. New in Fall 2007 is Forensic Anthropology Introduction, a lecture course with hands-on opportunities to assess human diversity in skeletal and genetic remains. Archaeology. Our archaeology program includes a combination of learning techniques and cultural prehistory. Our collection of artifacts and stone tool replicas is extensive (see some of our displayed materials in Founders Hall). Also watch for new summer opportunities to learn the methods and techniques of archaeology through field school.
Cultural anthropology. Modesto, located in the heart of the Central Valley, offers a tremendously diverse population and unique opportunities to appreciate and practice anthropology. Cultural anthropology students have gathered data on over 80 different cultures in Stanislaus County during the last 5 years through class ethnographic projects. The anthropology program at MJC also offer the very popular Magic, Witchcraft and Religion class that investigates cross-cultural supernatural practices, as well as specific ethnographic coursework in Native Americans of North America. New in Fall 2008 is Language, Culture and Communication which explores how culture shapes the way humans communicate with each other. Courses String figures |
