FORMAT OF THE COURSE:

A. CONTACT AVAILABILITY- I will answer email messages twice a week, on Wednesdays and Fridays. You can plan that I will be online between 10: 00 am to 12:00  pm (noon) on both days. If you want a quick reply -- email me prior to this time OR email me at my office (which I check daily on Tues/Thurs) at: hudelsonputnamc@mail.yosemite.cc.ca.us

C. CORRESPONDENCE-- ALL EXAMS/ASSIGNMENTS must be sent to me using the email format. This standardizes all student work, and avoids problems with conversion. Please submit exams to me at: hudelsonputnamc@yosemite.cc.ca.us  You may use a word processing program, just copy and paste this onto an email.

D. EXAMS

Each exam will be in essay format and include the following sections:

1. Geographical Significance (20 pts): see syllabus

2. MAPPING (10 pts): I will list two maps or two groups of maps. You will select one map, and describe the patterns that you see. You should select specific locations from the map, picking areas which show the highest and lowest regions of which the map illustrates. Then describe the process the map discusses. This section should be no more than two paragraphs in length.

For example, if you look at figure 3.9 on page 71, you will see that I described this map above in the geographical significance. I identified areas of high birth rates and low birthrates and also identified some of the reasons for this pattern.

If I give you a two maps to examine, simply do the same description for each map (high and low examples) and then discuss how they are correlated. If you look once again to figure 3.9 on page 71, then at figure 3.13 on page 73, you will see a correlation. Countries with high pop growth (Rwanda, Somalia, Ethiopia) all have very high infant mortality rates (more than 1/10 babies die before their first birthday).   Comparatively, countries with low pop growth (USA, Germany, Australia) have low Infant mortality (less than 1/100 die before their first birthday).  Why do you think this correlation exists? Mostly, it is the fact that we have modern medical technology that can keep our babies alive, and most first world'ers have access to such medical care.   If one of every ten babies dies before the age of one, this raises the number of births a third world female will have (Total Fertility Rate).

3. ESSAY (70 pts) This section is the bulk of your exam, and should at least cover one and one half pages in email form. If you do not have this length, then re-read the question. Typically people need to explain processes more thoroughly and use maps and examples (as well as web sites) to demonstrate the validity of their ideas. Make sure you put down your ideas, I do not want to see what the text has to say. If you do use quotations, make sure you explain what the quote means to you. Most people use quotes to substitute for areas of information they do not understand.   This is not acceptable. Please see syllabus regarding plagiarism.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, remember this is a lower division course. I want you to describe the key ideas which the text and my lectures address. I want to know what YOU think about the material, so please do not use materials which are not your own. (see syllabus regarding plagiarism!!)
