Geology, Archaeology, and Cultural History of Switzerland and Italy
Our third international expedition took place on July 16-26, 2007, and included two nights in Lucerne, Switzerland, and two nights each at Lake Garda and Florence, and three nights in Rome. Journey included tours of Verona, Venice, Florence, Pisa, Gubbio, Rome, and the Vatican. Geological highlights included a traverse of the Alps, travel to the summit of Mt. Pilatus, glacial lakes in the southern Alps, travel through the Apennines and the volcanic terranes in central Italy, and a tour of Mt. Vesuvius and the ruins of Pompeii, destroyed by a catastrophic eruption in 79 AD.
