E N G L I S H

In addition to pre-collegiate and transfer level composition courses, the English program includes survey courses in English, American, and world literature; introductory genre courses in poetry, fiction, and drama; and a number of topical courses such as Shakespeare, Bible as literature, folklore, and children's literature. The division offers creative writing courses in poetry, fiction, and script writing.

English is primarily a transfer major; however, an Associate in Arts may be awarded based on a completion of 20 units in English and satisfaction of other degree requirements.

Transfer majors should consult with a division advisor about specific requirements of the baccalaureate institution. In general, prospective majors are advised to choose a balanced load of genre and survey courses and to choose from among the topical courses according to their individual interests. The introduction to poetry course and at least one survey course in English or American literature are strongly recommended.

For students who have not already completed an English composition course at Modesto Junior College, or at any other college, placement in English 49, English 50, and English 101 requires the English Placement Examination. Entrance into English classes is clarified as follows:

English 49 Placement by examination or completion of English 49 with a grade of C or better.

English 50: Placement by examination or completion of English 49 with a grade of C or better.

English 101: Recommendation of the English Placement Examination or completion of ENGL 50 with a grade of C or higher.

English 102: Completion of English 101 with a grade of C or better.
