MJC Sign Language Club

Our Purpose

The Sign Language Club of Modesto Junior College is an organization of students whose purpose is to promote the use and knowledge of American Sign Language and Deaf culture on the college campus and in the community.

The Sign Language Club acts as a unifying entity for students studying or interested in American Sign Language and provides a means of interaction between sign language users at all levels of ability.

The Sign Language Club also acts as a community service organization by sponsoring and producing award winning projects. These projects include:

Signing Santa

Signing Santa provides deaf and hard of hearing children of the community the opportunity to interact with a Santa Claus that can communicate with them is Sign Language. This program, which was awarded the Golden Shoestring Award for Excellence in Low Budget Programming in 1989 by the National Association of Campus Activities, provides the deaf and hard of hearing children of Stanislaus County with an experience they may not get else where.

Holiday Child Sponsorship

In the spirit of the holiday season the Sign Language Club works with community agencies by sponsoring a deaf or hard of hearing child and their family for Christmas. By vigorously working with businesses in our community and members of the club, gifts are made and purchased in order to fulfill in where the family may not have the resources to do so themselves.

The Lakewood School Easter Project

Working with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program at Lakewood school in Modesto, California, the members of the Sign Language Club work together to present a Easter Program for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Student at this school. Activities during this program often include an Easter Egg Hunt, a visit by the Easter Bunny, and the giving of Easter Baskets to each child.

The resources for all programs produced by The Sign Language Club at Modesto Junior College are obtained through the fundraising efforts of the club and its members. These fundraisers are held throughout the year on and off campus.

Faculty & Staff Auction

This fundraiser draws upon the college staff and faculty as a resource for its income. Faculty and staff of Modesto Junior College donate the use of their time and skills as a auction item to be sold to people of the college community. Item auctioned in the past have included home cooked dinners, tennis lessons, music lessons, individualized tutoring, or a lunch out.
