SPANISH CHALLENGE EXAMS (101-102-103-104)

These exams are recommended for native speakers who have studied in a Spanish speaking country or for non-natives who have studied in a Spanish speaking country and mastered both written and oral Spanish. Students who can speak and understand Spanish but have never studied how to write correctly in Spanish (accents, punctuation, spelling) should not attempt these exams. These students and students interested in pursuing any type of bilingual career should take the Spanish 111-112 series. All of the challenge exams are written exams and include a listening comprehension and a reading comprehension section. The exam lasts two hours and must be arranged in advance with the instructor in charge. The exams cover the same grammar that is studied in Spanish 101, 102, 103, and 104.

Please note the following:

  1. The Challenge Exam is NOT a placement exam. If you wish to take a Spanish class but are not sure of your level, make an appointment to speak with a Spanish Instructor during his/her office hours.

  2. The Challenge Exam is a WRITTEN exam. Spelling, punctuation, and accents will be counted. If you have never studied how to write in Spanish, you should NOT attempt the Challenge Exam. You should enroll in Spanish 111 "Spanish for the Spanish Speaker."

  3. The Spanish 101 Challenge Exam covers Chapters 1 - 7 in Puntos de partida. The Spanish 102 exam covers Chapters 8 - 12; Spanish 103 covers Chapters 12 - 20. A copy of Puntos de partida is on 2 hour reserve for Library Use Only in the MJC Library and is available for purchase in the Pirates Bookstore. The Spanish 104 exam covers all of Pasajes: Lengua and Pasajes: Literatura, also on reserve and available for purchase in the Pirates Bookstore.

  4. The units that you receive upon successful completion of the Challenge Exam will be recorded on your transcript AT THE END OF THE SEMESTER. They do not count as part of your course load for this semester. If you need a 12 unit course load for financial aid or for insurance purposes, the Challenge Exam will not help you.

  5. The grade you receive on the Challenge Exam will form part of your PERMANENT RECORD. The instructor in charge will not explain grammatical terms nor translate instructions during the exam. Study the texts on reserve in the Library and make sure you know the terminology so that you can understand the instructions on the exam.

  6. In order to be eligible to take a Challenge Exam you must be currently enrolled at MJC and you must have a grade point average of 2.0 or better.

  7. If you are interested in taking the Challenge Exam, go to the Literature and Language Arts Division Office, in Founders Hall 275a, and request the application for the writing sample.
