English as a Second Language

MJC provides a wide variety of courses for people learning English as another language. Courses are offered in two related programs.

The Credit ESL Program includes 14 different courses on 6 ability levels from near-beginning to advanced ESL. Emphases in this program is on providing a solid foundation in English for continued college study or vacational training. Courses in the credit program are semester-long, graded college classes.

The Non-Credit ESL Program includes courses on 4 ability levels from near-zero English to low-intermediate ESL. Emphasis is on basic language and life skills needed to function in an English-speaking community. Non-credit classes are open-entry, so students may enter at any point in the semester whenever space is available.
