Past Progressive Tense
An Afternoon in the Park
     Gloria was sitting in the park yesterday
afternoon.  She was relaxing and enjoying the
weather.  She was feeding the birds when a
robber stole her purse.  While she was crying
about her purse, the police were running after
the robber.
Past Progressive
Use the past progressive to show that an action was in progress at a specific time in the past.
Past Progressive
Use the past progressive and the simple past in one sentence to show that one event interrupted or stopped another event.

Use the past progressive for two actions that continued in the past.  While means that the two actions were happening at the same time.

The past progressive is not used with certain verbs.  These are called non-action verbs.
